Depression and the
Licensed Mental Health Counselor

When a person has a persistent common cold, most people will contact their health care professional for relief. The same needs to be true when experiencing a depressive period in life. Depression can accompany changes, losses, disappointments, and anxious times in a person's life. Just as there is no need to suffer from common ailments without a doctor, there is no need to suffer without help from depression. Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) have the training, expertise, and desire to not only help alleviate depression, but to help improve life with renewed hope, new outlooks and a stronger personality.

There are two types of depression. First, there is a depression that is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. This type can be improved with therapy through counseling with your LMHC. It may be that medication will also be needed for this type of depression. Your LMHC can help you decide on a course of action.

The second type of depression is situational. It is shorter in duration and usually caused by an upheaval in a person's life. Death of a loved one, loss of a relationship, joblessness, loneliness, or other life changes can cause depression. Licensed Mental Health Counselors utilize a therapeutic, confidential and compassionate atmosphere to enable a person to develop new and different skills to handle life's challenges and transitions.

Licensed Mental Health Counselors have been around for quite sometime. They work in private practices, agencies, schools and doctors' offices. A Mental Health Counselor earning licensure through New York State insures that the highest level of care is available in whatever work environment you find a LMHC.
